Why Zero Waste October?

We are only two years away from our zero waste by 2020 goal!  During the month of October 2018, we called on the campus community to join us in celebrating, highlighting and achieving zero waste through a diverse series of events. Cal Zero Waste promoted this month to the campus community, inviting other groups to collaborate and add their zero waste themed events to the schedule. 

Zero Waste Activities:

Thursday October 4:

David Blackwell Hall Zero Waste Education Kick Off - 4:00-6:00PM
  • Thank you to TGIF for awarding Cal Zero Waste a grant in Spring 2018 to start a residence hall zero waste education program.  We kicked off our zero waste education program for David Blackwell Hall on 10/4. 

Tuesday October 9:

Zero Waste Tabling at Upper Sproul Plaza (hosted by Cal Zero Waste) - 11:00AM-12:30PM
  • Cal Zero Waste tabled on Upper Sproul from 11:00AM-12:30PM to talk trash! This was a great way to educate the community on how campus is getting to zero waste. By stationing staff associates at Solar Big Belly stations, we helped teach users what the Bellies are and how to use them! 

Wednesday October 10:

Tolman Hall Free ReUSE Day (hosted by Cal Zero Waste) - 10:00AM-2:00PM
  • Cal Zero Waste held the last and final Free ReUSE days at Tolman Hall this month before its demolition. We successfull diverted over 10,000 tons of goodies at our last 3 Free ReUSE days, but still had more that need to find a new home.

Tuesday October 16:

NCRA Zero Food Waste Forum (hosted by NCRA and SWANA)
  • Hosted by the Northern California Recycling Association and the Solid Waste Association of North America Gold Rush Chapter, the Forum helped local jurisdictions understand SB 1383 (2016), which requires no less than 20% of edible food currently disposed of in California is recovered for human consumption by 2025.

Everything You Need to Know About Zero Waste 2020 and Carbon Neutrality 2025 (hosted by Office of Sustainability) - Barrows 170 - 5:00-6:00pm

  • This event was an open opportunity to learn about how UC Berkeley plans to reach its carbon neutrality and zero waste goals! The event provided attendees with resources for getting involved with sustainability on campus and highlighting several green student organizations. The workshop was hosted by the UCB Office of Sustainability and facilitated by Carbon Neutrality Initiative Fellow Sage Lenier.

Thursday October 18:

Zero Waste Tabling at Upper Sproul Plaza (hosted by Cal Zero Waste) - 11:00AM-1:30PM
  • Cal Zero Waste continued the tabling effort on Upper Sproul from 11:00AM-1:30PM to talk trash! 

Zero Waste Event, One Pot Meals (hosted by Be Well at Work)

  • Making an entire meal in just one pot (or pan) can save you time not only in prep, but also in clean up! Presentation, demonstation, sample and recipes were provided in this workshop that showed attendees exciting and healthy new meal ideas. As a bonus for Zero Waste October, attendees also learned about reducing waste in the kitchen!

Friday October 19:

Tolman Hall Free ReUSE Day (hosted by Cal Zero Waste) - 10:00AM-2:00PM

  • Cal Zero Waste held the last and final Free ReUSE days at Tolman Hall this month before its demolition. In total, we were able to divert over 10,300 lbs of office supplies, furniture, and firehoses from landfill! 

Tuesday October 23:

Fall 2018 Zero Waste Working Group Meeting (invitation only)
  • The UC Berkeley Zero Waste Working Group reconvened on 10/23 to discuss campus progress to zero waste, updates from campus zero waste partners, and also current zero waste initiatives on the UC Berkeley campus.

Green Labs Semester Meeting at University Hall 370 - 11:30AM-1:00PM

Thursday October 25, 2018:

University Village Zero Waste Movie Night at University Village, Four Corners Room - 7:00-9:30PM

  • Nature Village (Click for more info on Nature Village) and Cal Zero Waste teamed up for a zero waste movie & pizza night at University Village! Attendees came out for some free pizza during a screening of A Plastic Ocean, a film that aims to educate viewers on plastic pollution in the oceans as well as ways YOU can make a difference and adopt zero waste lifestyles, especially for the upcoming Halloween season.

Saturday October 27, 2018:

PAC12 Zero Waste Bowl Football Competition
  • Cal selected our 10/27 home game vs. University of Washington as our 2018 PAC12 Zero Waste Bowl Football Competition game. We werelooking to achieve higher waste diversion, create collaborative program pieces to highlight zero waste at the game, and engage fans, sponsors, and the community to practice zero waste at the game and at home.  Cal Athletics partnered with Cal Zero Waste to support and reward those who are part of the zero waste efforts.

Tuesday October 30:

Environmentally Preferred Products Roadshow at Bank of America Forum at Haas Business School - 10:00AM-2:00PM

  • Environmentally Preferred Products Roadshow (EPP) is a semesterly showcase of products from vendor partners that have been conciously designed to reduce their waste.  These products were vetted by Cal Zero Waste to ensure that they align with our zero waste goals such as refills, waste reduction/elimination, take-back programs and more.

Wednesday October 31:

2018 Resources Roundtable: Innovation in Waste Management (hosted by BERC) (click for external link)

  • For the 5th annual Resources Roundtable, BERC hosted a one-day symposium of Bay Area innovators in the waste and materials management space for sharing of ideas and best practices. This event brought together entrepreneurs, non-profit organizations, academics and hands-on practitioners in and around Berkeley to learn from each other and share their work. In addition to selected speakers, the event hosted a panel session of experts and stakeholders and an open table session in the afternoon for direct collaboration and networking opportunities. - Description from EventBrite description
