The Campus Renewal Program is the university’s primary annual investment initiative for addressing deficiencies in campus facilities, particularly building systems at the end of their useful life. It prioritizes projects that improve life safety, accessibility, infrastructure performance, resource efficiency, and the renewal of critical systems such as electrical, plumbing, and HVAC.
The program’s mission is to guide long-term, strategic reinvestment in campus facilities through a transparent, multi-year planning process. Key principles include:
- Sustaining a multi-year investment plan that reduces the renewal backlog to within 15% of the operating budget.
- Improving energy, water, and overall resource efficiency.
- Enhancing accessibility across campus buildings and grounds.
- Upgrading general assignment teaching spaces every 5–7 years.
- Renewing campus environments—pathways, landscaping, and lighting—to meet safety and code standards.
- Prioritizing life safety and compliance issues which allow for coordination with projects outside the Campus Renewal scope to maximize campus investment value.
- Regularly evaluating newer buildings (post-2007) to ensure optimized performance and timely system renewal.
- Adopting a risk-based approach to allocate funding and evaluate necessary trade-offs in order to minimize avoidable long-term costs to the campus.
