The Utilities Maintenance group is responsible for the operation and maintenance of campus utilities (steam, high voltage, natural gas, water, and sewer) distribution. They perform preventive maintenance, repairs, emergency response, and all regulatory compliance work.

The Elevator Shop maintains and repairs nearly 350 units (including wheelchair and stage lifts) campus-wide.

Plumbers service restroom plumbing and fixtures, building sewer and drain lines, water faucets, drinking fountains, and heating and cooling lines of mechanical units. Machinists service and repair emergency generators, all types of fans, conveyors, compressors, and pumps. Sheet Metal workers provide service for maintenance and fabrication of almost any object formed from sheet metal

Your building's electrical needs can be serviced by this shop. Senior Building Maintenance Workers (SBMWs) maintain interior lighting fixtures in classrooms, auditorium, offices, hallways, etc. and building mounted exterior fixtures.

The Structural Shop is comprised of four skilled trades:
Carpenters, Painters, Locksmiths and Glaziers.

The Facilities Services Shutdown desk provides support to all campus clients requiring an interruption to one of our building systems or utilities. The shutdown desk reviews and processes all requests ensuring and contributing to a safe building environment for all.

Our Security Alarm Specialist manages the operations of all centrally-monitored campus security alarms with a focus on security and safety of our campus community. Our team is dedicated to keeping these systems operational and up-to-date at all times.

Employees designated by their campus unit or department, as an Alarm Manager, are authorized to request the installation, modification, repair or removal of centrally-monitored security alarm systems for the buildings, facilities or other areas they manage.

Part of UC Berkeley's research mission is to ensure that the campus environment serves as a learning laboratory for students and researchers. Recognizing that the campus environment is a shared resource managed by professional staff, this process is in place to ensure that facility-related teaching and class and research projects respect and protect this common good. Because projects often have impacts that are not anticipated, especially related to code compliance and budget estimates, early consultation with campus staff is recommended.

The BAS group uses proprietary building automation systems to control and monitor the heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems in 75+ campus buildings.

BAS is currently transitioning their automation systems from Web Access (Barrington) to WebCtrl (ALC) which is the new campus standard, meaning all new projects will be using WebCtrl. Currently, 26 buildings are using WebCtrl.

UC Berkeley is working to make sure that campus ventilation and filtration systems provide appropriate air-borne pathogen risk mitigation.

HVAC systems cannot prevent the spread of pathogens, but they can mitigate risk of infection by providing filtration and air exchanges. Wearing a mask and being vaccinated are the most effective methods of increasing your personal safety.
