New plan review and permit process for construction work

June 28, 2018

Campus Colleagues,

We're writing to you to introduce a new plan review and permit process for construction work here at UC Berkeley.

Following a year of process development by a working group from across campus, starting on July 1st, 2018, all construction projects on campus will be required to submit for and receive a permit prior to starting construction. This will apply to all to projects, including those managed by college and department facilities managers and others who contract directly with vendors or utilize their own maintenance shops to perform construction work.

Inspection Services, formerly a part of the Real Estate Division, will now be the Campus Building Department, providing permit and plan review services for project and facilities managers.

All projects will follow the same requirements for quality, code compliance, and documentation. You can learn more about these requirements by visiting our Plan Review and Permit page.

The Campus Building Department will review and inspect all construction projects at UC Berkeley. In addition reviewing for conformance to the California Building Code and the UCOP Facilities Manual, we also work to ensure that projects follow the Campus Design Standards and contribute to a safe, efficient and long-lasting built environment in keeping with Berkeley's standing as a world-class university.

Visit us on the web at http://building.berkeley.edu to find out about plan review, permits, inspections and other resources to help teams deliver code-compliant projects and facilities managers successfully navigate the design, inspection, and documentation requirements of construction on campus. We also have a Frequently Asked Questions section and links to codes and other resources on our website. In addition, we will have a service counter at 2000 Carleton St, Rm 230., and can be reached at building@berkeley.edu or 510-642-0489.

We look forward to serving the campus in an efficient, consistent and practical manner to ensure that Berkeley remains a safe, functional and well-built campus for the next 150 years.

Regards,

Malcolm Gaustad
