Zero Waste Building Program 2020

**Program Update as of October 22, 2020 - Zero Waste Building Program Resuming (Centralized bin deployments ONLY)

We in Facilities Services are closely monitoring the latest updates and guidelines about the coronavirus (COVID-19). With that said, our department is resuming this bin project, but ONLY in centralized locations as defined here:

  • Corridor/lobby locations that are central to each floor
  • Restrooms
  • Kitchenettes - rooms designed as kitchens with a sink

A deployment schedule for each of the buildings currently in the program has been updated in the table below.

We will not be making changes in offices/suite spaces at this time and we will update the campus community as soon as we have any updates.

We appreciate your understanding of current circumstances and are still deeply committed to providing your buildings with the necessary waste infrastructure.

We are not able to conduct the informational Town Halls as planned.  But if you would like to learn more about the program, please see a link to the right for the Zero Waste Town Hall Presentation.

If you have any questions, please reach out to ucbcustodial@lists.berkeley.edu

Overview of General Program & Origin - see update above

The Zero Waste Building Program ensures that our campus buildings are set-up with a standardized system of landfill, recycling and compost bins. This system will make it easier for us to collectively recycle and compost more, while we simultaneously work to reduce our waste.

The standardized system goes hand-in-hand with the Custodial Service Guide.  If there are questions or concerns about Custodial Servicing, please see the Custodial Service Guide.  For Custodial inquiries beyond the guide, please contact Custodial Services at ucbcustodial@lists.berkeley.edu

To-date, Facilities Services has worked in partnership with a number of campus partners to implement the zero waste building program into about 60% of campus state-funded facilities. A list of buildings that have been transitioned can be found here. Please note that lab spaces in the buildings were excluded from the first phase of roll outs.  Facilities Services in the process of developing a laboratory specific zero waste program. More information on that program to follow.

In 2020, Facilities Services will roll out the Zero Waste Building Program in the remaining 40% of campus state-funded facilities.  Please see the list of these remaining buildings below. The projected timeline for the completion of these roll-outs is July 1, 2020.

We will be hosting a series of Zero Waste Town Halls for the remaining scheduled buildings scheduled where we will go over program details, expected timelines, as well as answer questions that the campus community may have.
