Zero Waste Building Program 2020

**Program Update as of March 9, 2020 - Zero Waste Building Program Temporarily on Hold

We in Facilities Services are closely monitoring the latest updates and guidelines about the coronavirus (COVID-19).

At this time, we need to put the Zero Waste Building program on temporary hold so that we can adequately redirect our services and resources towards necessary preventative measures for our campus.

Unless directly notified otherwise, this means that all currently scheduled walkthroughs, town halls, and building roll-outs will be canceled and rescheduled for a later date. We will provide an update about this timeline as soon as we have it available.

We appreciate your understanding of current circumstances and are still deeply committed to providing your buildings with the necessary waste infrastructure.

In the meantime, if you would like to learn more about the program, please see a link to the right for the Zero Waste Town Hall Presentation.

If you have any questions about this, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Zero Waste Specialists Izzy Parnell-Wolfe ( and Michelle La (

Overview of Program

The Zero Waste Building Program ensures that our campus buildings are set-up with a standardized system of landfill, recycling and compost bins. This system will make it easier for us to collectively recycle and compost more, while we simultaneously work to reduce our waste.

The standardized system goes hand-in-hand with the Custodial Service Guide.  If there are questions or concerns about Custodial Servicing, please see the Custodial Service Guide.  For Custodial inquiries beyond the guide, please contact Custodial Services at

To-date, Facilities Services has worked in partnership with a number of campus partners to implement the zero waste building program into about 60% of campus state-funded facilities. A list of buildings that have been transitioned can be found here. Please note that lab spaces in the buildings were excluded from the first phase of roll outs.  Facilities Services in the process of developing a laboratory specific zero waste program. More information on that program to follow.

In 2020, Facilities Services will roll out the Zero Waste Building Program in the remaining 40% of campus state-funded facilities.  Please see the list of these remaining buildings below. The projected timeline for the completion of these roll-outs is July 1, 2020.

We will be hosting a series of Zero Waste Town Halls for the remaining scheduled buildings scheduled where we will go over program details, expected timelines, as well as answer questions that the campus community may have.
