FS IT, in partnership with Campus Shared Services IT, is in the process of migrating workstations and laptops to Microsoft Windows 10 and Office 2016. This project will take several months to complete and will also require hardware upgrades to support the new OS.
The migration to Windows 10 and Office 2016 is necessary as Microsoft is no longer actively developing Windows 7 and the OS is no longer actively supported by central campus IT groups. Windows 10 offers enhanced security and many user-friendly features. As with any software upgrade, this can be a significant change for our users. REIT and CSS IT are committed to provide you support through the transition. As part of the upgrade process, the CSS IT technician will provide a one-on-one orientation to Windows 10 for you when your workstation is upgraded. In addition, FSIThas created a Windows 10 & Office 2016 Resources page with links to a number of self service learning resources. Additionally, REIT is planning to offer additional training and lunch & learn sessions in the coming months.
In conjunction with the OS upgrade, FSIT will be replacing workstations to support the new OS requirements and to establish a routine replacement cycle. Currently there are over 100 workstations that are off-warranty and will not function with Windows 10. While the focus for replacement will be on workstations that are either out of or near the end of warranty, we are looking at user computing needs and strategically replacing some in-warranty workstations with newer models. The in-warranty replacements will then be cascaded to locations were the computing load is lower. Looking forward, our goal is to place all workstations on a 4~5 year replacement cycle.
The migration process is expected to take approximately two hours per workstation to complete. Prior to migrating your workstation, an FSITor CSS IT staff member will contact you to schedule a convenient time for the migration and your orientation.
