The map below illustrates the process and timeline of requesting a Gender Inclusive Restroom Remodel. Requesting units should note that not all restrooms must be remodeled to be designated as a gender inclusive restroom. Additionally, if a unit is not interested in a gender inclusive restroom but would like to take steps towards making sure their restrooms are more gender inclusive they can schedule a conversation by contacting girestrooms@berkeley.edu

The following provides further details about the illustrated process and timeline of requesting a Gender Inclusive Restroom conversion.
Step 1 - GIRR Request Submittal
- Unit Submits GIRR Request Form: You can submit the Gender Inclusive Restroom Form here
-
Request Processed: The requesting unit will receive a confirmation that your request has been submitted. Your request will be reviewed to check that (a) there isn’t already an existing request and (b) if/when a feasibility study will be conducted. If you are a student submitting the request, the request will automatically add the necessary department or building contacts to the request chain so the individuals responsible for participating in and scheduling the feasibility study are notified.
Step 2 - Feasibility Study Conducted
A feasibility study looks at the types of changes that would need to be made to the current restroom layout to make the restroom Gender Inclusive. The number of changes & types of changes will determine the cost of the remodel & be compiled in a ‘Scope of Work’ document.
Step 3 - GIRR Team Presents Requesting Unit with Scope of Work for Review
You or the appropriate person in your unit will receive a copy of the scope of work which will include a proposed budget for cost share. The unit then provides an approval or rejection of the proposed scope of work. The scope of work can be adjusted and redrafted depending on the requesting units specific modifications, funding available, and interests that best serve their community.
Step 4 - Approval / Rejection
If Approved - GIRR project proceeds. If the requesting unit approves the GIRR project construction and any other necessary modifications begin.
If Rejected - GIRR Project does not proceed. If the requesting unit does not approve of the GIRR project for any reason then we close the request. If another request is submitted by a student or someone outside of the responsible point of contact for the building then we will continue to notify the responsible point of contact about the requests in the interim. Requesting units should note that not all restrooms must be remodeled to be designated as a gender inclusive restroom. If a unit is not interested in a gender inclusive restroom but would like to take steps towards making sure their restrooms are more gender inclusive they can schedule a conversation contacting girestrooms@berkeley.edu
Step 5 - GIRR Project Completed
Campus Communication & GI Map Updated: Once the remodel is complete the Gender Inclusive Restroom interactive campus map will be updated to include your building.
